SitToCpt is a utility for converting archives created by StuffIt 1.5.1 into Compact Pro™ archives. It was written by Bill Goodman and is free.
WORKING WITH SITTOCPT
To convert an archive using SitToCpt, you must first start the SitToCpt application. You will be asked if you want a log file. If you request a log file, you may specify the name of a file which will be written with a log of all operations performed.
Once started, use the Convert command in the File menu to select a StuffIt archive to be converted. If you have checked the “Name New Archive Automatically” option in the Options menu, the filename for the new Compact Pro archive will be generated automatically. If not, you will be prompted to name the new archive.
SitToCpt will extract all the files from the StuffIt archive and re-compact them in the Compact Pro archive. When the conversion is complete, SitToCpt will validate the new Compact Pro archive if you've checked the “Validate Archive After Converting” option in the Options menu. Validating consists of extracting each file and verifying the cylic redundancy code (CRC) which was generated for each file during compacting.
When the conversion is complete, SitToCpt will delete the original StuffIt archive if the “Delete Original After Converting” option in the Options menu is checked. It is highly recommended that you use the validate option whenever the delete option is enabled. This will ensure that the original archive is not deleted if there is an error in the conversion process.
BATCH MODE OPERATION
SitToCpt may be operated in a relatively non-interactive “batch” mode. Batch mode is invoked by selecting SitToCpt and all archives to be converted while in the Finder, then choosing the Open command from the Finder's File menu. SitToCpt will prompt for a log file (logging is not optional in batch mode). Next, it will process each of the specified input files. Output filenames are generated the same as if the “Name New Archive Automatically” option were checked.
No errors will be displayed on the screen unless they are severe enough to force SitToCpt to halt. In general, SitToCpt will skip a file if any error occurs (the error will be noted in the log file). When the session is finished, you should check the log file to make sure processing proceeded as planned.
The “Validate Archive After Converting” and “Delete Original After Converting” options used during batch processing are the same ones in effect the last time SitToCpt was executed.
LIMITATIONS
SitToCpt can convert all StuffIt archives to Compact Pro archives with the following limitations:
• Archives must be compatible with StuffIt 1.5.1 (archives created with later versions of StuffIt may or may not be compatible depending on the options selected at the time they were created).
• Archives cannot include encrypted files.
• Archives cannot be segmented (no join operation is provided).
• Archive comments must be less than 4097 characters long (comments longer than 254 characters are converted to a file and stored in the archive).
• Archives cannot contain more than 1500 files and folders.
Note that you must have disk space for BOTH the StuffIt archive and the Compact Pro archive.
